I was in the Army for three years and all I knew were people in the army – and a few Air Force – now I don't know anybody. It is a shame and – in my humble opinion – a blot on our country that we – most people – have been able to take no no part in the carnage we want other people to do in our name. Maybe, if we all had to take part, we wouldn't have as many wars.
I have a neighbor and swim buddy who is active in the Navy reserves. Otherwise my other military connections are from the past as I once dated (at different times) two Naval Academy graduates and attended the wedding of friend who married a naval officer. He’s since retired from service but we’re still in touch. Much of that comes from living in Charleston, SC when the naval base was active.
Oh and I have a friend via Neil who served in Vietnam and retired as a two star general from the Army.
Your comment is accurate. Powers at the top feel none of the pain of service.

I wonder if that is the real reason congress and Nixon – if memory serves – eliminated the draft. They were just tired of people complaining about Vietnam. Now we can feel like a good American by standing up for the National Anthem at baseball games. Twice during the World Series. Oh boy!
